Unlimited Promises

Scripture: Deuteronomy 19:8,10; 20:1, 15
“And if the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as he swore to your ancestors, and gives you all the land he promised them...10(He will give you this land if you are careful to obey all the commands I have given you—if you always love the Lord your God and walk in his ways.)...“When you go out to fight your enemies and you face horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid. The Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you!...15 But these instructions apply only to distant towns, not to the towns of the nations in the land you will enter."

Observations:
Hundreds of years before Moses ever was God had already promised Abraham's descendents that they would inherit the Promised Land (Genesis 13:15). When Moses came along, he led the Israelites out of Egypt en route to make God's promises a reality as they were now on the verge of actually entering it. Here, before they ever set foot in the Promised Land, Moses elaborates on the conditions of God's promise- the fact that so long as they continued to demonstrate their obedience to God by following His commands and walking in His ways, not only would they inherit the Promised Land and live in it, but as they continued to obey the Lord, God would continue to expand their territory and give them victory over the people's beyond the land of Canaan. In other words, there was no limit to the extent God was willing to bless His people if they would simply stay faithful. Or you could just say, God's blessings on their lives would always be proportionate to their obedience. Unlimited obedience = unlimited promises of blessing!

Application:
While Israel never did experience the full extent of God's blessings they could have, we have the opportunity today to live in relationship with the same God who still desires to bless those who "are careful to obey all the commands I have given you...[and] love the Lord your God and walk in his ways" (vs.8). Paul's understanding was that God was then and still is now "able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think." (Ephesians 3:20). To the extent that we can fathom God's blessing in our minds, He is able to do more in us, through us, and for us than we ever dreamed possible, IF we will do our part to let His Word govern our day-to-day lives. The only questions are then, "how much of His blessings to you want?" and "to what extent are you ready and willing to trust and obey?"

Prayer:
Father, thank You today for the potential that you set before each and every one of us to experience the reality of Your promises in our lives. Help us to live carefully and allow Your holy Word to direct us in all we do so that we may walk in Your ways and rejoice in Your blessings. Amen.
