Remember Never to Forget

Scripture: Deuteronomy 4:9-10
9 “But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren. 10 Never forget the day when you stood before the Lord your God at Mount Sinai, where he told me, ‘Summon the people before me, and I will personally instruct them. Then they will learn to fear me as long as they live, and they will teach their children to fear me also.’

Observations:
Just before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, Moses took an opportunity to remind them of all that God had done and to warn them to never forget it. He drew special attention to the moment when God established His covenant with Israel and invited them into a special relationship with Him. God foresaw the dangerous possibility that His people would be distracted by the world around them and ultimately forget the One who made it all possible. He knew that if His people would remember Him, their children would too; but He also understood that if they forgot about Him, so would the generation that followed them, and every generation after them. But why was it even necessary to remind them and warn them not to forget God? Surely by now they would have learned about the serious consequences of disobedience by now, right?

Application:
No matter how long we have been in relationship with God we will never get to the point where we no longer need to be reminded about who God is and what He had done in our lives and warned never to forget it. Why? Because as human beings, our natural bend is towards sin, not God, and maintaining a right relationship with God requires that we consistently keep God and His principles in the forefront of our minds. It's important for us to constantly surround ourselves with people and places that will focus our thoughts on God and His precepts and intentionally develop the kind of relationships with others that will remind us of who He has called us to be. If we fail to do these things, our children's future's are at stake. Are we willing to sacrifice the quality of our kid's relationship with God simply because we "forgot" to keep Christ at the center of our lives? As a community of believers it is God's plan for us to "You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God." (Hebrews 3:12).

Prayer:
Father, help us today to keep You always at the forefront of our thoughts so that our very lives serve as the reminder of who You are and who You desire to be in the lives of others. Help us to be on the lookout for each other and be the guardian of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen.
