God's Kind of Success

Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:10-11, 17-18
"When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.“ But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.  17 He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ 18 Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath."

Observations:
After 40 years of senseless wandering in the wilderness, Moses finally sheds some light on Gods purpose for His people during that difficult season in Israel's history. As much as God was teaching them to trust in Him He was also  teaching them not to trust in themselves by forcing them to become totally dependent on Him. His purpose in all this was to ensure that when they did in fact enter the Promised Land, they would not think they had anything to do with it. Their success during the wilderness was because of Him, not because of them; in the Promised Land nothing was going to change. He was and forever would be their source.

Application:
The times in our lives when we are faced with circumstances that force us to depend on God are not necessarily bad. In fact, they might even be sent from God Himself to force us to recognize that our success in life depends not on our ability but on His. It's those seasons in life where we learn never to take God for granted so that when He does bless us we are still able to acknowledge His rightful place in our lives.

Prayer:
Father, how thankful we are to have You as our source. Give us success in all we do and teach us full dependence upon You so that You will always get the credit for it. Amen.
