Divided Loyalties (James 1:5-8)
Scripture: “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.”
James 1:5-8
Observation:
James draws the line in the sand when it comes to faith. Either you trust God or you don’t. Those that need His help and wisdom will get it when they ask in faith. But what about those straggling the line of faith? James is clear- believers can’t ride the fence. There is no dual citizenship for Christians. We are either all in or not at all. James pulls no punches in one of the clearest teachings on prayer in the entire Bible- basically by picking a side you reap the consequences, for better or for worse. Those that seek God wholeheartedly should expect to find Him on that side of the line but those with one foot in the world never will. This is especially true of prayer but also every other part of life. He even goes so far to say that failure to wholeheartedly commit to God affects the overall stability of your entire life.
Application: Jesus said “no one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24) -He forces us to pick a side when it comes to what we put our trust in as the foundation of our lives. If we choose wisely God will supply everything we need to do His will. If not, not only will we receive nothing but the very bedrock of our lives remains unstable. Wholehearted trust in the Lord is the only sure way to guarantee the outcome that is pleasing to Him (Prov 3:5-6), not to mention I will benefit in the short run as well by receiving God’s wisdom and direction.
Prayer: God show me the areas in my life where I lack wisdom and replace those potholes with faith. Help me to trust you when I don’t see a clear path. Give me an undivided heart today that will trust you about everything else. Amen.
