Never Say Never (Hebrews 13:5-6)

"...He has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?'" (Hebrews 13:5-6 ESV)

Never say never when it comes to this promise from God. While we don't always perceive it, it is nevertheless true. Scripture tells us that He sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) and that His perspective on our lives is infinitely higher than ours (Isaiah 55:6-8), so when God says to you "I will never leave you or forsake you", He means it, because only He can see everything completely as things really are.

The reason He promises to never leave us is because our perception of reality is less than perfect; in fact, it's far from it. Who hasn't ever wondered if God was still there during a difficult season of life? We often question this promise when circumstances of life are shouting that God is nowhere to be found.

The thing about feelings though is this- they lie. Since we tend to see things through the filter of our feelings, when we feel forsaken, it's hard not to believe it's so. It's in those very moments of uncertainty about God's faithfulness that we often lose touch with reality- not our reality, God's reality.

Not unlike Neo in the Matrix, we have to remind ourselves that our although are feelings themselves may be real, they are not reality upon which our hope is based. Our perception of reality apart from God's promises is not reality. That's why He reassures us again and again that His faithfulness never changes. Regardless of our circumstances, He calls us to "walk by faith and not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7), because "the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. (2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT).

We should never say never when it comes to the promises of God because they are not dependent upon our ability or perception but on God's. No matter what we may be facing, our circumstances are never more real than God's promise to never leave us. In every situation God is present and accounted for. Because He is with us we have hope; not in what lies before us but in the One who is walking with us.
