Fight or Flight?
Scripture: 1 Samuel 28:1-6
1 Three days later, when David and his men arrived home...they found that the Amalekites had made a raid...they had crushed Ziklag and burned it to the ground. 2 They had carried off the women and children and everyone else but without killing anyone. 3 When David and his men saw the ruins and realized what had happened to their families, 4 they wept until they could weep no more...6 David was now in great danger because all his men were very bitter about losing their sons and daughters, and they began to talk of stoning him. But David found strength in the Lord his God."
Observations:
Still afraid for his life, David left the land of Israel and moved into a Philistine neighborhood far enough out of Saul's reach. But he ran away from one problem only to run into another. While he and his soliders were away their town was raided by the Amalekites who stole everything amd burned the rest. David's men were on the verge of killing him. In that moment David was alone with no one supporting him. But
instead of running away from his problems again, he turned to the Lord and found new strength. With God's help he found the strength to rally his men and keep going until they recovered everything they had lost. Because he turned to God and refused to allow his circumstances to conquer him, David saved his own life and the lives of others.
Application:
God never promised us a trouble-free life. In fact, right in the middle of doing God's will, troubles sometimes occur more often. When we're faced with difficult circumstances we can choose to run away or we can, in difficult circumstances, find strength in the Lord to overcome them. The good news is that we can do all things through Christ-who gives us STRENGTH! (Philippians 4:13). But it's our job when we are confronted with difficulties in life to make it a point to turn to the Lord and receive the strength we need to overcome. We are only truly defeated when we decide to stop trying. "But with God, all things are possible" (mark 9:38).
Prayer:
Father, when we find ourselves surrounded and alone, remind us that You always provide us the strength to overcome. We choose to endure with Your help today and walk in victory and not defeat. Amen.
