The Anchor of Truth
Scripture: Judges 18:30-31
"30 Then they set up the carved image, and they appointed Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, as their priest. This family continued as priests for the tribe of Dan until the Exile. 31 So Micah's carved image was worshiped by the tribe of Dan as long as the Tabernacle of God remained at Shiloh."
Observations:
Before Israel had a king, they were self-ruled by various leaders. This made for a bad combination of government due to the fact that there was a severe lack of spiritual leadership for God's people. As a result, many forgot God and began worshiping idols. In fact, the entire tribe of Dan was so out of touch with God's commands that it took them a couple hundred years after they entered the promised land to even attempt driving out the inhabitants and begin settling down. But the Bible points out that even after they did settle, they set up an idol and worshiped it. To make things worse, they selected Moses' grandson Jonathan to be its priest! Only 2 generations removed from God parting the Red Sea, God's people had all but forsaken God and discarded His Word.
Application:
It matters very little what God has done for us in the past if it has no bearing on our lives in the present. There are no guarantees in life outside of the promises of God's Word. He Himself is the only constant. The moment we begin ignoring God's commands it is not God that changes- we change, but not for the better. We drift into the currents of the world around us until we lose all bearings. If we are not firmly anchored in the truth of God's Word today, it's only a matter of time before God becomes someone we used to know in the past. It's is daily obedience to His commands that keeps our relationship with Christ a present reality in our lives and our future hope. Apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).
Prayer:
Father, keep us anchored today in the truth of Your eternal Word. Help us to live holy, obedient lives as we treasure Your commands in our hearts. Amen.
