What's Your Legacy?

Scripture: Judges 2:10-11
"After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. 11 The Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight and served the images of Baal. 12 They abandoned the LORD..."

Observations:
So after God's people settle in the Promised Land (with the Canaanites they had not driven out) it was only a matter of time before their tolerance for the religous beliefs and practices of their culture were absorbed by the next generation. The first generation that had previously pledged their wholehearted obedience to God's Word (Joshua 24) eventually died and left their children to inherit the Land God had given them. The only problem though was that they not only inherited the Promised Land but also the influence of the Canaanites living in it! Because they had not fully obeyed God's command to conquer their enemies with the Lords' help, the battles not won by the first generation became the downfall of their children. What a different story could have been told for generations had they simply chosen to obey.

Application:
Each of us have a personal responsibility before God to exemplify a life of obedience before the world- especially when it comes to our own children. It is our primary job to lead our children in the ways of God by teaching and modeling His commands as "living letters written by Christ" (2 Cor. 3:3). We can teach what we know, but we will always reproduce who we are. The issues that we deal with in life will enevitably show up in the lives if our children if we fail to apply God's Word in our own. However, God's promise remains just as true that if we will lead by example and conquer sin in our own lives, only then will we be able to train our children in the way they should go (prov. 22:6) simply because we have already been there ourselves. The decisions we make both good and bad are investments in our children's relationship with God. If we choose obedience, they have a much better chance of doing the same. However, if we choose disobedience, don't be surprised when the next generation does the same.

Prayer:
Father, help us today to reflect our commitment to Your Word in the choices that we make and by the example we set for our children. We ask for your guidance as we seek to lead our children in te ways of Christ by seeking today to invest in their faith both now and for eternity.
