Scripture: Joshua 19:51
"51 These are the territories that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the tribal leaders allocated as grants of land to the tribes of Israel by casting sacred lots in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of the Tabernacle at Shiloh. So the division of the land was completed."
Observations:
When the Israelites entered the Promised Land God gave Joshua specific directions as to how it was to be allotted to each tribe. Here it seems to indicate that part of the process involved a rolling of the dice to "randomly" select who got what according to God's will. However this random method only applied to 7 of the 12 tribes (18:1-2). So why did the first 5 tribes get the biggest and te best portions of land while the majority of everyone else were forced to role dice over what was left? There seems to be a direct correlation between those tribes that chose battle and received a reward and those tribes that chose passivity and were handed the leftovers of the Promised Land.
Application:
Throughout His Word God shows Himself to be a God of reward for those who obey Him (Deut. 28:2). It's not like God is stingy; in fact, He generously gives good gifts to His children and desires to do so. However, He also promises only to reward those who "diligently seek Him" (Heb 11:6) by obeying Him fully. While God desires to bless us, His blessings are also determined to some extent by our obedience to His commands. We never have to settle for leftovers unless we choose to. Rewards requires action; Inaction earns nothing, especially when it comes to God's expectations of us. To the degree that we are found faithful, to that degree we can expect the best God has to offer.
Prayer:
Father, help us to never be content with anything less than Your very best. We choose today to offer you our very best love and obedience. Thank You in advance for the richness of Your blessings that are sure to come. Amen.
