Never Cease To Be Amazed
Scripture: Luke 24:35-43
35 Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. 36 And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. 37 But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! 38 “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? 39 Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” 40 As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he ate it as they watched."
Observations:
The day Jesus rose from the dead, before He revealed Himself to His disciples He made a few pit stops and made surprise appearances to some of His followers. On the road He spoke to two men who didn't realize it was Him until a few hours later. He had also briefly appeared to Mary in the Garden and also Peter elsewhere. Afterwards, while the disciples were all gathered together, Jesus finally made His resurrection debut and suddenly appeared in the room unannounced! You'd think that after all the miracles they had seen, the thousands upon thousands that had been healed, the fact that Jesus calmed storms with a word and walked on water, that He fed thousands of people with a sack lunch, that He opened blinded eyes, cured leprosy, and raised the dead, that after three years of this stuff on a regular basis nothing would surprise them anymore. But the disciples still found themselves in awe of how Jesus came back to life after He was publicly executed! Jesus acted completely normal like they shouldn't have been all that surprised and proceeded to casually raid their fridge while everyone else sat in awkward silence and awe.
Application:
Unlike the first disciples, the rest of us who have never seen even a fraction of the miraculous things Jesus did on earth, how is it that we are much less impressed with the miraculous work of Christ in our lives? Of anyone, we ought to be the most amazed people on the planet simply because of the fact that we serve the living God who is still performing miracles and doing incredible things. But for some reason we tend to find ourselves living in borderline boredom with God far more often than amazement and awe of Him. The fact that the miraculous is not so common place ought to fill us with all the more wonder when God shows up in our lives in supernatural ways. But for the most part, unlike the first disciples, we cease to be amazed by God because we don't expect the supernatural and therefore don't experience it as often as we should. But just like He did with the first disciples, Christ is looking for opportunities to show up unexpectedly in our lives so that we will always stand in awe of the greatness of who He is.
Prayer:
Father, help us to never cease to be amazed by You. Today we wait with expectant anticipation of Your power and presence in our lives. Open our eyes and help us see You as You trul are so that we may stand in awe of You once again. Amen.
