The Key to Life

Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:11, 16, 19-20
11 “This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you to understand, and it is not beyond your reach...If you do this, you will live...19 “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses...Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! 20 You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life...”

Observations:
In His closing words to the nation of Israel, Moses summarized the entire covenant between God and His people by offering them the choice to accept or decline His offer of relationship by choosing either to obey His commands or refusing them. As an act of His grace, God weighed in as they were considering His offer and went so far as literally telling them which option to pick that would lead them to a preferred destiny rather than an empty existence. It was as if the Divine teacher was now putting His class to the test after covering all of the content of Relationship With God 101 but then during the test He pulled out the answer key and put it on the board in front of the entire class! That's why He could say (vs. 11) "this is not too difficult" and (vs. 20) "this is the key to your life".

Application:
When you think about it, God's not trying to trick us into something we don't want. But He is, however, offering us the secret to experiencing the life you've always wanted- a relationship with Him! Our heavenly Father desperately wants us to pass the test so much so that He has given us an open book test that the only possible way we can fail is if we "choose" to (vs. 19). He also ensures that every time we choose obedience/relationship we will find the life we're all looking for and continue to live under His blessings. With the answer key in front of us and God's word open before us, we have a no fail opportunity before us on a daily basis to "choose life".

Prayer:
Father, thank You for allowing us the privilege of living life in relationship with You. Grant us the willingness to always choose obedience to Your commands so that we may continue to live the blessed lives You've called us to. Amen.
