God's Not Impressed
Scripture: Luke 12:1-3
Meanwhile, the crowds grew until thousands were milling about and stepping on each other. Jesus turned first to his disciples and warned them, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees—their hypocrisy. 2 The time is coming when everything that is covered up will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. 3 Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!
Observations:
One day Jesus' ministry was became so popular that the crowds were literally flocking to see Him. But Jesus took that opportunity to teach his disciples how little God cares about people's opinions. God wasn't impressed with the fact that Jesus and His disciples managed to attract thousands of people in a single meeting. Jesus was quick to warn about the danger of playing to public opinon. What the public sees is exactly that "public". The fact that the disciples were becoming "big" in the eyes of others didn't make them any more spiritual, in fact, it only distracted them from what God considers of highest importanct- personal character. He warned them about the importance of maintaing a clean conscience before God by reminding them that on Judgment day each person's private life and their public life would be one and the same. What He was trying to teach them was that from God's perspective, they already are.
Application:
We often live our lives in the present because of the immediate rewards it brings- compliments, high regard from our peers, even fame and power. But following Christ should never be about external factors, rather a relationship with God is an internal reality that works it's way out to the outside, not the other way around. It matters who we are trying to impress,God or people. If it's people, we run the risk of catering to what's popular. If it's God then we will always find His favor and be blessed in all we do.
Prayer:
Father, help us today to live for You and You alone. May we not be swayed by public opinion but rather be motivated by the reward of knowing and serving You. Guard our hearts from that which would hinder our relationship with you. Amen.
