Captain's Log
Scripture: Numbers 33:1-2
"This is the route the Israelites followed as they marched out of Egypt under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. 2 At the Lord’s direction, Moses kept a written record of their progress. These are the stages of their march, identified by the different places where they stopped along the way."
Observations:
The Bible records that God purposefully directed Moses to keep a written record of Israel's journey towards the Promised Land that described in detail the various places they camped to not only remind them who they were but where they had come from. Many times throughout their wanderings, God's people complained and lost perspective simply because they had forgotten how bad it really was to be slaves in Egypt (Numbers 14:3). But the fact that Moses kept a written account of where they were, where they came from, and kept his eyes on where they were going gave him the strength to persevere. At any point along the way it would have been tempting for him or for anybody to stop and take a look around them and conclude that this "wilderness life" was not exactly ideal; however, that time in Israel's history was one of the most significant times during their relationship with God as He was preparing them and forming them into the people He called them to be. At any point their journey through the wilderness could have seemed like a complete failure, but from God's perspective He viewed it as a written record of their "progress" (vs. 2).
Application:
Sometimes it's very helpful to keep our own written account of the things God has done in our lives (prayers answered, questions unanswered, experiences shared- good and bad, etc.) because over time we tend to forget how much God has brought us through and we take our relationship with Him for granted. Many times a simple walk down memory lane with God will produce the motivation and encouragement we need to persevere through difficult times or seasons in our lives that in the moment seem fruitless and empty. It's one thing to know God is in control but it takes on a whole new meaning when we can look back and specifically point to the times and places where God has again and again proven Himself faithful in our lives.
Prayer:
Father, remind us today of where we've come from so that we will never take You or Your plan for our lives for granted. Help us to remember that "our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they [are] producing for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!" (2 Corinthians 4:17). Thank You for Your faithfulness to us in the past and that we can trust You today to continue to be who You are in the future. Amen.
